Real Estate Trends – Little Rock July 13, 2010

In a little over a year and a half our time in Germany will come to an end and we will be moving back to the States.  Since his plane is not in many locations, we know we can only go to two places – Little Rock, AR and Abilene, TX.  Because of this we have become real estate stalkers.  When we first started looking at houses in Little Rock it became painfully obvious new houses were selling at the same price as fixer uppers.  The older houses offer things a newer house cannot – established neighborhoods, quirks and charm something the new houses being built obviously lack.  We came to the quick conclusion that we are new house people.  This only makes sense since we will only be in one place for four years at a time and investing money in a house that we know we won’t be staying in long just doesn’t seem to make any sense.  So, while searching through new houses we started to notice trends that came with every single house and we don’t necessarily mean that in a good way.  Again, we realized we will want some sort of partially built house where we are able to pick the details so hopefully we won’t have to deal with the following…

Trend #1: Trayed ceilings.  You will have to search far and wide to find a new/er construction without tray ceilings.

Trend #2 – Roman/Greek Columns. No thank you.

Trend #3 – 45 degree counter top/breakfast bars.  These just scream awkward to me.

Trend #4 – Not large enough to fit a TV hole above the mantle.

Trend #5 – Over abuse of trim work and the lovely awkward opening above the mantle.

Trend #6 – Oiled fixtures in bathrooms

And last but not least – wood flooring, as seen in almost every picture seen above.  This is a trend I am more than ok with.
